 October 27th, 2013:

Norcross, GA
Georgia Mineral Society
Meeting was called to order at 1:30 p.m.

  • Pot Luck:
    Members brought covered dishes. Lunch was served from 12:30am to 1:30pm. Thanks to everyone who contributed!

  • President Report:

    • Our scheduled guest speaker, Jerry Armstrong, had to cancel his presentation as he is still recovering from surgery. We'll postpone his presentation to a later meeting when he is feeling better!
    • We are now members of the American Federation Mineralogical Societies (AFMS) & the Southeast Federation Mineralogical Societies (SFMS). We were welcomed by Danny Griffin (President of the SFMS) and he will try to attend our January meeting. We have access to insurance for meeting places & events, and also are invited to attend XXX events and can go their workshop (great, inexpensive vacation related to lapidary and working…)
    • Tuscon is around the corner. If people are going to attend, let the group know so we can rally there.
    • See if any members present are still missing their Meteorite Men Packages.
    • Call for volunteers for December show. See if Anita/Wayne can secure our table.
    • Ask if members have any auction items. Call for January meeting to have a big auction to rebuild coffers.

  • Treasurer:
    Wayne reported on the AFMS meeting and gave the treasurer's report ($1809).

  • Member Reports:

    • Dave Gheesling:
      Dave G. has invited Rob Wesel and Mike Bandli to speek at our January meeting and brought a Chelyabinsk map, Created by Svend Buhl, for the group to view.

  • Adjourn for Swap Meet:
    ~2:00 pm - Members brought meteorites or tektites that they wanted to sell or trade to our annual MAG swapmeet. This is a great way to sell or trade off those duplicate locations and help other MAG members expand their collections.

 July 14th, 2013:

Dave's Falling Rocks Collection
Meeting was called to order at 1:00 p.m.

  • President's Report:
    Sean addressed the MAG members with the following subjects:

    • First, let's all welcome our newest member, John Jewell!
    • Brief member report regarding the meteorite theme table at the National Astronomy Day. It was anoter success. Thanks to everyone that attended and helped with the Meteorite Men and National Astronomy Day at the Tellus Museum on April 20th. It was a great event, and the Tellus team did a wonderful job! We even had a surprise guest visitor, Glenn Burns, who attend our MAG meeting and the presentation given by Geoff and Steve.
    • For all of the MAG members who could not attend, I will be bringing your gift bag to the meetings, so you will be able to pick them up the next time I see you.
    • Any suggestions for future speakers would also be welcome. Please contact Sean directly.

  • Treasurer:
    Wayne gave our account status and reminded members about renewals for 2013.

  • Member Reports:

    • Anita Westlake:
      There are a few shows coming up that members may be interested in attending. In the 2nd week of August there is a show in Dalton, Georgia. There is also a meteorite and mineral show in Jacksonville in September.

  • Show/Tell/Trade:
    At the conclusion of the meeting, BUYING and TRADING of swap meet items continued... Members were also able to take a tour of Dave's Falling Rocks collection. Members viewed pieces from the recent Chelyabinsk fall, and a large iron. And made sure to ask Dave about hise new display cabinet... it was a great story of patience and construction ingenuity.

 April 20th, 2013:

Cartersville, GA
Tellus Museum
All MAG members were admitted to Tellus for free on April 20th for National Astronomy day
Meeting was called to order at 12:00 p.m.

  • President Reports:
    Sean welcomed all of our meeting guests, including Glenn Burns, and distributed gift packs to all MAG members in attendance.

  • Treasurer:
    Wayne gave the treasurer's report and member renewals status.

  • Guest Speakers, The Meteorite Men:
    Geoff Notkin and Steve Arnold gave us a personal presentation, and signed books and photos for MAG members, as well as an informal meet-and-greet after their presentation.

  • National Astronomy Day:
    1:00pm to 7:00pm - After the meeting and speaker, MAG members were invited to participate at the National Astronomy Day at Tellus. We set up a table set up in the main hall where Tellus visitors came up and asked questions about meteorites and learned about our group. It was a great opportunity to spread the wonder of meteorites to the families that visited Tellus during this special event. The table was swamped throughout the event! Every person that came up to the table was given a small unclassified NWA meteorite sample to take home with them. It was a big hit with the kids! We also donated a large NWA specimen and an indochinite tektite to all 5 of the hourly drawings. Congrats to Viviana Goldenberg, Joanna Gillette, Alyssa Tatum, Nathaniel Blun, and Logan Corley on their prizes!

    • Lecture in Theater
      1:00 pm - lecture typically runs between one and two hours depending on Q & A. From Eternity to Here: The Meteorite Men's Global Search for Space Rocks (Book signing to following in Alcove). 4 MAG tables behind Patty for Meteorite give aways, hourly door prize entries at the table, winners posted on easel by table

    • Atlanta Astronomy Club
      4:00 pm to 5:00 pm, Classroom 4 - Julian speaking on Space Spinoffs

    • Meteorite Men screening of Henbury Crater from Season Two
      5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Banquet Rooms, PDR & Cafe - with commentary by Geoff and Steve

    • New Set of Collectable Cards to be given away at stations:
      5:00 pm to 9:00 pm -
      1. Sardis Meteorite - GSEF Exhibit, Temp Gallery
      2. Cartersville Meteorite - CARTERSVILLE METEORITE - Banquet Room
      3. Georgite - Meteorite Slices Examined and Shared, set up with microscope & flat screen: Julian in the Alcove
      4. Fireball photo and plastic bag for Card storage - Observatory

    • Star Walks with David
      9 pm & 9:30 pm - Gather at Front Circle

 January 13th, 2013:

Meeting was called to order at 2:00 p.m.

  • President's Report:
    Sean addressed the MAG members with the following subjects:

    • Robert Ward will be giving a presentation on the 4th of November. It will be a GREAT event, and Robert is now a member of MAG.
    • The Mammoth show was a great event. Lots of nice tektites this year, and a few good deals on meteorites.
    • Next Event - GMA Wells Creek trip - March 9th - $25 to MAG members (joins GMA for a year.) Charles Carter at fieldtrips@gamineral.org or call 770-998-7949
    • Next Event/Meeting: Tellus NAD - Volunteers for table. We are going to help sponsor event with Meteorite Men. - April 20th. John Iacullo had his picture in the Daily Tribune News for last year's event.
    • We are looking for a speaker for our July meeting.
    • Final note about up-coming Tucson show - Feb. 1st through the 17th.

  • Treasurer:
    Wayne gave the treasurer's report ($4459) and collected fees for renewals and the winning bids for the auction items.

  • Auction:
    Several donated items and specimens were auctioned for the MAG coffers that raised approximately $185.00. Thanks to those members that brought items to the auction!

  • Membership:
    Members who still have to turn in their 2013 dues, please contact Wayne Dodd.

  • Treasurer:
    Wayne gave the treasurer's report ($4063.44) and collected fees for renewals during the meeting. MAG is donating $25 to use the GMS main room for the MAG meeting. Wayne will work with Sean to get paypal attached to our MAG account to make membership renewals easier.
     
  • Member Reports:

    • Anita Westlake:
      Anita W. will check about a box or table at the Cobb show in March.
    • General Query:
      Is there any possibility for a Wetumpka trip, or is it possible that Woodbury may be a viable option... do they have shatter cones?
    • Hal Povenmire:
      Hal Povenmire repoted on the status of the georgiaites and his new book: Tektites, A Cosmic Mystery
       
  • Show/Tell/Trade:
    At the conclusion of the meeting, BUYING and TRADING of swap meet items continued.
